Did your cat do the no-no in the house? Urination at home can bring cat owners to the brink of despair. When your pet pees on your favorite clothes, carpet, or couch, it’s important to react quickly.
You can remove the liquid and the smell with simple household preparations or special cleaning solution agents. Cat pees have an unpleasant stench and leave stains.
Therefore we’ve put together a list of six items to eliminate urine odors and stains – in this post. Hope you find this article
When would a cat urinate at home?
When your pet begins to avoid urinating in their sandbox, you need to analyze the possible causes. It’s essential to seek veterinary guidance and get your cat checked to rule out any serious urinary tract infections, or kidney disease and seek guidance on dealing with the undesired cat behavior.
Sometimes the reason could be the sand. Maybe you got another cat litter sand that now smells weird to your pet? Have you moved the cat toilet to a new place that is no longer quiet and comfortable?
Stress can also lead to defecation in the home, for example, in the event of family conflicts, new roommates, or noise during
renovations or relocations. It could also be the cat’s age.
Otherwise, marking places with urine is considered natural behavior. By marking with a scent, the cat leaves messages about, for example, the boundaries of its territory.
It is important to note that performing urination outside the cat toilet is not intentional. Still, it is usually a sign of significant physical or emotional stress.
Don’t punish your cat. Try to stay calm and find out the cause.
Six proven approaches for removing cat pee from the couch
It is best not to treat sensitive textiles or surfaces with aggressive cleaners. One can use several home remedies to remove cat urine, these also aid in removing cat urine smells.
Before eliminating stains and before you jump onto a strong carpet cleaner, try a home remedy in a hidden place (for example,
on the underside of a rug or beside the medicine cabinet). So you can check if the agent is gentle on the material.
Cat urine, for example, can be easily removed with soap and diluted white vinegar. First, treat the stain with soap. Then apply a homemade white vinegar-based cleanser. To make a cleanser:
- Mix one-part vinegar with two parts water.
- Let the diluted vinegar stand for ten minutes.
- Clean the area again with water.
2. Lemon juice
The aroma of citrus can pretty well mask the smell of cat urine. Take lemon oil or lemon or orange peel. However, do not use citrus oil on textiles or sensitive surfaces as you will have a greasy stain instead of urine stains.
Good to know: Your feline friend can’t stand the smell of citrus and prefers to stay away from anything that smells like lemon, for example.
3. Baking powder or baking soda
Baking powder is another method for removing cat urine stains. Please wait for the powder to dry before applying it to the stain. Then carefully brush it. You can use baking soda as an alternative to baking powder.
You can also mix baking soda and vinegar, fill it in a spray bottle and keep it handy, ideally just around the cat’s litter box.
Alcohol disinfects and is particularly effective at cleaning smooth surfaces and removing stains. Please wait for it to take effect after spraying it on the affected area.
Then use a damp clean cloth to wipe the area clean. You can also use alcohol to treat less sensitive textiles before washing.
5. Soap and ground coffee
Ground coffee is also helpful in removing the smell of cat urine.
First, clean the affected area with soap and then apply the powder. When the ground coffee is dry, brush it carefully or vacuum it. Like mouthwash, ground coffee is only suitable for dark materials. It is best to test it in a hidden place beforehand if in doubt.
Mouthwash is also suitable for removing odors and urine stains. Mix part of the water with the same amount of mouthwash and soak the affected area. Caution: Use colored mouthwash only on dark materials. Treat textiles or light-colored surfaces only with clear mouthwash to ensure no damage occurs.
TIP: Completely remove cat urine immediately, avoid letting it sit overnight. Get rid of excess moisture in the urine spot and air dry the area if need be, to avoid lingering odors. Place the cat around their litter box.
You must eliminate cat urine as soon as possible. If you let it sit, there’s a chance your pet may pee in the same spot and the cat urine smell will linger. The cleaning process should be done with caution, as your cat’s keen nose can detect even the tiniest amounts of pet odor.
The process of removing cat urine from the couch
Below are the first steps in removing urine from the couch.
If you have witnessed a wet crime committed by your cat, immediately grab napkins or paper towels. The paper towel should blot up as much urine as possible. The more urine is absorbed, the easier it will be to get rid of cat urine odor and wash away stains.
After drying with napkins, treat the stain with soapy cold water. Apply the sponge with soap and water.
It absorbs the unpleasant cat pee smell and helps remove pungent odors. Repair the area with the problem. Instead of soap, you can also use an antibacterial powder.
The third stage is to clean cat urine polluted couch cushions or bed linens with a unique solution prepared from citric uric acid or vinegar.
Due to its oxidative properties, vinegar can evaporate from the fabric and urine smell.
However, if a cat or dog has caused problems, this method may not be as effective.
After the treatment, it is necessary to dry the fresh stain. You can do it with a hairdryer or iron. Remember, a hairdryer can overheat. Give it time.
To thoroughly get rid of the urine stain, specialty stores offer a variety of special cleaners. You can use odor eliminator to remove urine stains with antibacterial sprays, as well
Also, these preparations will even help against pet stain caused by feces and vomiting.
Remove cat urine and unpleasant odors with unique products.
If none of these above aid methods help, you will have to resort to chemicals. Many pet stores offer special liquid stain remover that removes pollution and cat odor.
You can also go for enzymatic cleaner, hydrogen peroxide, dish detergent, dish soap, commonly available upholstery cleaner, hot water, or a mechanical cleaner with a special carpet cleaning attachment.
An enzyme cleaner or a mechanical steam cleaner can be very helpful with dried urine stains, while hydrogen peroxide can help with urine odor and cat pee stain.
Another method that is perhaps the safest is dry cleaning. Although dry cleaning is the most expensive option, this method will also get rid of pee stain and unpleasant odors and refresh your couch.
A few more tips:
Prevention is important – do your best to dissuade your cat from climbing on the couch and learn to use a cat toilet as soon as possible.
Care – Be careful when choosing a scent for a cat toilet because not every smell you like and your cat may like it. Some perfumed aromas can cause cat aversion to the cat toilet because they are susceptible to odors.
Spray the furniture with lemon juice to keep the cat from climbing on the couch. Direct sunlight helps kill the cat pee odor on the sofa.
Cleaning upholstered furniture is a laborious process, so while we’re not giving out interior design tips, use wood furniture where possible. Knowing the basic methods, you can clean the couch at home.
